About Me:

I rebuilt, own and run a 32’ wooden gaff sloop, Bufflehead, offering custom daysail excursions, sailing about 2,000 nm a year out of Rockland on island trips and sightseeing jaunts. I used to sail far on a little boat solo and on big boats worldwide, and previously am a boatbuilder and carpenter by trade. Now I get to work on the water under sail with my kids, with me half the time, and live in the house I built a couple miles from the harbor tucked into the woods with streams coming down the hill. I’m glad to make friends and hoping to meet some who also dreams of making music, food, love and fun while working at the needs of life with as much play as possible amidst the demands and difficulties of life.

Sailing Experience:

I was a weird kid who at twelve wanted to learn enough to design, build and sail my boat around the world. I learnt to sail at 11 on a sunfish at summer camp. At 12, I managed to get (half) a Rhodes 19. At 13, my first job in the industry was teaching sailing on them. At fifteen I got some training in boatbuilding. An early interest in boatbuilding and rigging skills led to me leaving school and going aboard a Barquentine as bosuns mate in the pacific for a year at 17. I bounced about boats a bit and at nineteen managed to get a 26’ engineless gaff cutter, built in Bequia, that I packed my tools aboard and spent six and a half years NE to Caribbean and across to Ireland and UK and back, singlehanded, finding work as I went. That was great. Now, it’s my fourteenth year operating Bufflehead out of Rockland. We sail through the archipelago and visit some islands and look for porpoises and more.
I love my beautiful life, and would enjoy being able to share it. I also dream of cruising again once my ten year old is grown.
