Homemade Deodorant Recipe: Practical and Eco-Friendly for Yacht Living

Space is limited when living on a yacht, and multi-purpose items become your best friend. This simple homemade deodorant recipe is natural and effective and utilizes ingredients that serve multiple purposes in your floating home. Here’s how to make it and why it’s perfect for yacht life.

Ingredients:

2 parts coconut oil
1 part bicarbonate of soda (baking soda)
1 part arrowroot powder

Add optional essential oils for fragrance

Instructions:

  1. Melt Coconut Oil: If solid, gently melt the coconut oil in a small saucepan or microwave. Avoid overheating just liquefy it.
  2. Mix Ingredients: In a bowl, combine the bicarbonate of soda and arrowroot powder. Stir in the melted coconut oil and mix until smooth. Transfer into a reusable container.  Add essential oils for fragrance at this point.  The mixture should solidify over the next hour, the ingredients will settle so keep stirring to combine until it forms a creamy paste.
  3. Store: Once it has solidified it can be stored.  If you are in warm climes, then keep somewhere cool; coconut oil has a melting point of 24C.  If this happens, just place it in the fridge to solidify again.
  4. Use: Apply a pea-sized amount to clean, dry underarms with your fingers or a small spatula.

Benefits of Homemade Deodorant:

  • Natural and Chemical-Free: No aluminium or synthetic fragrances.
  • Cost-Effective: Made from inexpensive, easy-to-source ingredients.
  • Eco-Friendly: Reduces waste from commercial deodorant packaging.

Bicarbonate of Soda on a Yacht:

Bicarbonate of soda is a versatile powerhouse on board. Here’s how it can simplify life on the water:

  • Cleaning: Use it as a scrub for sinks, counters, burnt pans, and even the hull to remove grime without scratching surfaces.
  • Laundry:  Adding bicarbonate of soda to your washing can clean and whiten your clothes.
  • Deodorizing: Sprinkle it in the galley, fridge, rugs, or bilge to neutralize odours.
  • Cooking Aid: A pinch can help with baking or tenderizing meat.

Coconut Oil on a Yacht:

Coconut oil isn’t just for deodorant. It’s a must-have for any liveaboards:

  • Skin and Hair Care: Works as a moisturizer, lip balm, and hair conditioner to combat saltwater exposure.
  • Cooking: Ideal for frying or as a butter substitute.
  • Make-up remover: Apply to the face and either wipe off with cotton wool or wash.
  • Oil Pulling: Use a teaspoon to swish around your mouth to improve dental hygiene.
  • DIY Body Scrub: Mix with ground coffee for a fragrant exfoliant.
  • Massage Oil: Great to use as a massage oil to ease those winch arm muscles!
  • Lubricant: Use it to oil squeaky hinges or protect metal from rust.

This homemade deodorant recipe is easy to make.  It has only three ingredients that can be sourced in most countries worldwide and make excellent additions to your yacht’s inventory.
