SailGP Yacht Racing
What is SailGP?
SailGP is a yacht racing league using foiling catamarans. Professional racing teams compete against each other at different locations around the world. This year is the inaugural year and 8 teams are competing in Sydney Australia, San Francisco USA, New York USA, Cowes UK and Marseille France. The final event in Marseille will see a cash prize of $1,000,000 on offer to the winning team in a winner takes all fight-out with the top 4 teams.
What yachts do SailGP use?
SailGP yachts are fully-foiling F50 catamarans which have been based on the design of the AC50’s that were used in the last America’s Cup and can reach speeds of 50 knots.
SailGP Cowes UK
SailGP was due to take place over the start of Cowes Week on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th August. However, the Met Office has issued two yellow weather warnings for the UK for Friday and Saturday. SailGP has now cancelled the sailing on Saturday but it should go ahead on Sunday with racing starting from 15:00hrs.
SailGP Race Village
The SailGP race village has been set up between Cowes Green and Egypt Point between Cowes and Gurnard. There is a grandstand with a big screen to show all the action on the water with live commentary. Tickets to reserve a seat can be bought online at SailGP. The F50’s do come in very close to shore which makes for a very exciting event for the spectators. There is also the Adrenaline Lounge (so long as the wind doesn’t take it down) and VIP tickets can be bought to gain access to this sheltered viewing area. There are stalls, street food and a bar along with the race village which is open to everyone. If you don’t want to buy a ticket for the grandstand or lounge you will be able to watch from Cowes Green.
