Shark Bay, Western Australia, Sept 2016
Shark Bay is one of my favourite sailing destinations, it is spectacular, full of wildlife with plenty of anchorages to explore. The boat sleeps 4, is quite comfortable, shallow draft, easy to sail and pretty quick.
Community Boat
I have an idea. I own a classic sailing boat, 80 years old, with major updates made recently. She is ready to sail across the world. And I would love to turn her into or use her as, a home base for people from all over the world who are seeking a challenge, adventure, and different lifestyle. The ship has been fully paid for but requires an investment (repairs, fees, running costs) of about 15.000 Euro a year, which comes out at 1250 Euros a month. If I can find 3 people who live and work from the boat, that would be about 400 Euro a month. With more people (I can host up to 6) costs could come down to as little as 200 per month. This is pretty cheap rent and is only for boat maintenance and keeping her in good condition. It does not include living expenses. Anyway, my idea is to find people who love this idea and are able to work location independent from the boat and enjoy a free lifestyle on earth oceans, going anywhere we, as a group or community, would like to go to.
It is a social experiment. I want to put out this idea to see if there is any feedback from the sailing community here.
My boat is a classic yawl with two masts and a lot of deck space for running workshops or carrying goods.
We could, for example, run humanitarian or environmental projects, give workshops, teach sailing, you do your own stuff, whatever… There are many options and I am open for ideas of any kind, however strange they may be.
So let’s see if this idea takes foot and develops in any direction. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with the craziest ideas you can think of. Anything is possible.
Thanks for your consideration. Looking forward to hearing your ideas.
