Notice to Mariners
Notice to Mariners – What are they?
Today more than 60 countries of the world compile nautical charts for sailors and boating enthusiasts to navigate around the world’s oceans. A Notice to Mariners is quite simply a regular update that informs navigators of any changes to these charts. These notices can be sent out weekly, bi-monthly or monthly depending on the hydrographic office in question and in either paper or electronic format.
A Notice to Mariners is a very important document for navigational safety and can provide such information as advice on port procedures and/or requirements, notification of new and updated rules and regulations for navigation, and changes to charts including removal of buoyage. If an extended cruising trip is to be taken in unfamiliar territories then it is important to ensure your charts are up-to-date.
In the UK the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office will issue a Notice to Mariners. They also have a very useful video explaining how best to update your chart from these notices.
