Discover Sailing Day – Australia
It’s a well-known fact that Australia is a nation big on sailing. Could it be because the interior of the country is too hot and inhospitable to live so most of the cities and towns sprang up on the coast? Maybe the heat just encourages watery sports! Sailing Clubs abound the 50000 km coastline and sailing is encouraged from a young age with the clubs being family-friendly. Such events like Discover Sailing Day, which is held throughout the country, could also help make Australia a nation of nautical folk.
Discover Sailing Day – this year – is on Sunday 27th October. It is as the name suggests, an excuse for those without any sea legs to discover sailing. Sailing clubs around Australia host this free event to encourage people out onto the water under sail. It is a great opportunity to have a fantastic day out with friends, work colleagues, family or even by yourself. Emphasis is placed on showing everyone just how fun, safe, and accessible sailing is.
Visitors can go out for a short sail with an experienced sailor, have a look around the club and the facilities on offer, and learn about the programs and courses available. Everyone is welcome and even kids as young as five years old can sail if they have a parent or guardian by their side. People of all-abilities are welcome and some clubs do offer accessible facilities for people with a disability. Just find your nearest participating club by looking on the discover sailing website and come along.
Each club will have its own schedule of activities for the discover sailing day so please contact the club beforehand to check their itinerary. You will need to allow at least 1.5-2 hours if you want to go out on the water. Be sure to wear clothes and shoes that you don’t mind getting wet…..oh and of course plenty of sunscreen and a hat.
