Sailing Apps

There are a plethora of sailing apps out there but here are a few of the more unusual and fun ones:

Ships Bells – By ApplTech

Do you long for the old days, when ships had riggings and there wasn’t a strip of fibreglass to be seen?  This app can transport you back to those days with the sound of a ship’s bell every hour and half hour.  In the days of Nelson, the ships bell would strike every half hour to mark the sailors’ watch duty, eight bells in total for a four-hour watch.  The ship’s bell will strike in the background and does not have to be running.  Requires iOS 4.0 or later.  This app is currently free and has a 5-star rating.

Tall Ships – Age of Sail By Mantid Interactive

This app will while away the hours whilst you are stuck below in a Force 8.  It is an action-packed 3D game simulating naval combat.  The player commands his ship and fights in campaign battles which are set in the Mediterranean Sea during the 1800s.  As the player progresses he will command larger, more capable ships and the enemy becomes more capable too!  Requires iOS 3.0 or later, the current price is £2.49 and it has a 3-star rating.

Pirates

Ever harboured a wish to be a pirate?  Well, now you can with the Pirates app.  Sail the high seas looking for treasure to plunder and pirates to fight.  Search islands (real-time locations) for booty.  Requires iOS 4.0 or later.  This app is free and has a rating of 4 1/2 stars.

Scurvy Scallywags (In the Voyage to Discover the Ultimate Sea Shanty)

This is a pirate puzzle game, move around the board collecting treasure to reassemble an Ultimate Sea Shanty.  Fight pirates and sea monsters along the way blasting them with your arsenal of handy skills.  Requires iOS 5.0 or later.  The app currently costs £1.49 and is rated 5 stars.
