With over 2000 visiting ships, Kiel Week is billed as the biggest sailing event in the world. Held in the last full week in June (this year 22-30 June 2013) in Kiel, Germany. Kiel Week will see over 3 million visitors, not just a sailing event it is also a music festival too with stages all over the city.
The opening of Kiel Week starts on 22 June 2013 at 7:30 pm at the Town Hall Square. Germany’s longest open-air festival will be raising the roof on the Friday, with pop, rock folk and classical music, a mix to satisfy all the generations. Special guests are guaranteed at the “gewaltig leise” series of concerts on the Krusenkoppel stage. Children will be entertained at the Spiellinie, playground and festival area, Germany’s biggest cultural children’s attraction. Specialities, music and mini cabaret from all over the world can be seen at the International Market in front of the Town Hall.
As for the sailing, more than 40 sailing events and 400 planned regattas start on eleven racecourses. For those of you that prefer the traditional sailing, there will be a forest of masts on the banks of the firth, with over a hundred traditional sailing boats moored at the quay. The highlight of the week is a tall ships parade with more than 100 ships taking part on the second Saturday of Kiel Week.
