Writing a Profile

Writing a Profile for a Dating Site

What do I know about writing a profile?  Well I run Lovesail.com a global online dating site for boating enthusiasts.  If your passion is sailing and you are looking for a sailing soul mate then Lovesail can help.

Running a dating site is hard work but fun and enjoyable, and one of the many tasks I undertake is approving new profiles.  As part of the Lovesail screening process when new members join and write their profile, they need to be checked and approved, or not, as the case may be!  As you can imagine I have read a great many profiles over the years, both good and bad.   Here are my 5 top tips for writing a profile for a dating site:

HONESTY

This really is the best policy!  For whatever reason, some people feel the need to embellish, exaggerate or just plain lie when writing a profile.  Who will ever know?  Well, think ahead a little and if you do meet your soul mate, then at some point you are going to have to come clean and admit that you can’t dance/sail/cook.  This isn’t a good start for any relationship.  If you lie about things from the start how is your soul mate ever going to trust you?  Be honest, and that includes your age!

POSITIVITY

No-one likes a grump.  When writing a profile try to be as positive as possible.  Modern-day life has many challenges, resulting in people leading very busy lives.   One consequence of this is that people have to assess situations and people quickly in order to save time.  So faced with the choice of meeting a possible match who…..loves/enjoys/has a passion for a particular pastime, rather than one who……hates/gets irritated/can’t stand certain annoyances, then I know which one I would choose!

SHORT AND SWEET

When writing a profile try to keep it short and sweet.  You don’t need to run through your whole life story.  Save that for your date – it will give you something to talk about.  Just write a little about why you are on the site, what you are looking for and a bit about your hobbies.  In the case of Lovesail.com, the members will indicate why they are on the site (dating, friendship or crew) and what they are looking for.  It may be that they want a serious relationship or perhaps just someone to sail with at weekends on a friendship basis.  They will then outline their sailing experience and some of the places they have sailed to and other hobbies or interests.  The great thing about a niche site like Lovesail is that you already have a common interest.

SPELL CHECK

When you have finished writing a profile then please proofread it and check for spelling mistakes.  Most software will indicate spelling and grammatical errors, so do take the time to check and correct them.  If you can’t be bothered to spend a few minutes checking your profile then what other things will you be lazy about?!

PHOTOS

I know this article is about writing a profile, but photos do go hand in hand with writing a profile.  Whether we like it or not profile photos are important.  You are much, much more likely to be viewed if you have a photo on your profile.  When choosing a photo make sure it is clear and we don’t need to turn our laptop/head around to view it.  Don’t post pictures where you are in the distance or in a group – and remember to smile!  This next one is directed at the gentlemen. A selfie of you in your dining room, at night, sitting in your vest is not a good look!  Put some thought into it, think about the lighting and the background.  By far the best photos for Lovesail will be the ones of you out sailing.  If your confidence deserts you at the last minute then at the very least post a photo from your holiday collection or even your boat!   And finally please make sure it’s a recent photo – not one that you’ve unearthed from 10 years ago.  Nothing annoys the members more than if on meeting a prospective date they look nothing like their profile photo.

I hope this has helped and given you some pointers for writing a profile for a dating site. Oh and one last thing……be proactive, don’t sit back and wait for people to contact you.

Carpe diem.
