The Volvo Ocean Race

The Volvo Ocean Race was formally known as the Whitbread Round the World Race, and is a yacht race around the world.

The race is run every 3 years and will cover over 39,000 nautical miles in some of the most challenging seas the world has to offer. Starting this year in October the 1st leg leaves Alicante in Spain and heads for Cape Town South Africa.  It’s then onto Abu Dhabi UAE, Sanya China,  Auckland New Zealand, Itajai Brazil, Miami USA, Lisbon Portugal, Lorent France and Finally Galway Ireland for the finish in early July 2012.

Six teams left Alicante this year.  Each team made up of 11 professional yachtsmen, aboard a Volvo Ocean 70 monohull yacht which can attain speeds of 60mph.   Each leg of the race can take up to 20 days to complete and is non-stop racing day and night to reach the next port of call first.  the Volvo Ocean Race is undeniably one of the world’s most demanding team sporting event.
